Romsey Station volunteers mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme

Last Friday Three Rivers Community Rail Partnership volunteers held an exhibition in Romsey Station waiting room to mark the above battle in line with other events across Europe.

With the help of the Hampshire Regiment and Melchet Court School near Sherfield English, the exhibition included artefacts recovered from the battlefield, medals, local wartime postcards and letters, a list of all local soldiers who had been been casualties, poems, replica period dress, an original stretcher from the battle and descriptions of the battle itself.

A collection was also made for the military charity Combat Stress, which raised £50.00.

A steady stream of visitors came to see what was on show, and it was touching that several were able through the records available to trace relatives who had fallen during the First World War.

The information display and poems, which are updated every month by our studious volunteers, continue to be available for viewing although all the artefacts have now been returned to their owners.

We would like to thank all who took part in this respectful, commemorative exhibition, including Great Western Railways for letting us use the Waiting Room.
