Eastleigh

Eastleigh Station opened in 1841 named ‘Bishopstoke Junction’. In 1889 it became ‘Bishopstoke and Eastleigh’ and in 1923 it became simply ‘Eastleigh’.

Originally built as two island platforms with an overbridge, the removal of the line nearest to the town in 1990 meant that level access could be made to the northbound platform. On platform 1 are canopy pillars cast for the original station, bearing the words ‘W & J Lankester of Southampton 1841’.

Little more than a small settlement until the coming of the railway, the town of Eastleigh is very proud of its railway heritage. A 1995 bronze sculpture entitled ‘Railwayman’ can be found in the town centre.
