Romsey

Now a Grade II listed building, Romsey Station opened in 1847, and is a twin of Micheldever station.

The famous children’s author, the Reverend W. V. Awdry (1911-1997) was born in Ampfield on the outskirts of Romsey. His father, who was a local Vicar, had many railwaymen as parishioners. Inspired by his own childhood, Awdry wrote the ‘Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends’ storybooks.

During both World Wars, the station was a major embarkation point for troops. Also during The First World War 10,000's of warhorse's made their way to and from Romsey's Remount Depot via the train station. There is a permanent exhibition of photographs in the waiting room showing the history of Romsey train station.
